Individual Relationship Therapy can help you increase intimacy and connection by focusing on yourself. Through the assessment and treatment process, you will learn the barriers getting in the way of emotional connection, what leads to relationship disengagement, obstacles that prevent you from being heard and understood, and what stops you and your partner from feeling like a team.
Our step-by-step approach begins with a relationship history questionnaire, followed by a virtual assessment meeting to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your relationship and your goals. After your assessment is complete, we will custom tailor your treatment plan to meet the needs of your unique relationship, bridging the latest in relationship science with the art of applying it to you.
Develop the skills to create close, respectful, and engaged relationships. Walk away with action-oriented strategies you can implement in your relationship years after therapy is complete. You will leave counselling with relationship resources that range from communication scripts to strategies that re-wire how you think about relationships. You will understand the foundation that makes a successful relationship work and how to apply straightforward relationship principles in the privacy of your home.

5 Reasons Individual Relationship Therapy or Couples Therapy Will Not Work for You
Save your money and do not engage in therapy if:
Domestic violence is present in the relationship.
Therapy is usually not the answer to domestic violence. Couples experiencing battery should never engage in relationship therapy. Persons experiencing battery should look for help to leave the relationship. Couples who have made mistakes and who have infrequently pushed, slapped, poked, or shoved may be suitable for couples therapy.
One partner has already decided the relationship is over.
If you already know you are going to leave the relationship, but are just doing it to appease the other person before ending the relationship, it’s unlikely therapy will be successful.
There is a relationship secret.
As the saying goes “you’re as sick as your secrets” and so is your relationship. From secret lovers to secret drug use, secrets shake the foundation of relationships and couples therapy. If a secret has been shared, then therapy can be useful to heal the betrayal left by the secret and rebuild trust.
You want the therapist to take your side.
A therapist is not a referee. If you are looking for someone to help you blame your partner this is not for you. Success depends on each person’s ability to take guidance from the therapist and engage in therapeutic interventions.
Lack of action outside of session.
Therapy is not magic or a quick fix. It requires intentional effort, practice and persistence to implement changes outside of session.
Therapy Methods that are Backed by Science
Stop wasting time on relationship help that does not work. Ember Relationship Psychology uses two main approaches to couples and relationship problems: The Gottman Method and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
The Gottman Method

The Gottman Method emphasizes a focused approach to solving the problems in each relationship. The goals of this therapy are to foster closeness, enhance friendship, tackle conflict in a helpful way, and help couples create shared meaning for their relationship.
The Gottman Method helps couples become aware of the factors that are predictive of divorce, and how to overcome common relationship pitfalls.
Relationship assessment and treatment is based on the Sound Relationship House Theory. It is designed as a guide to help therapists and couples understand the strengths and weaknesses of their relationship. Based on where the weaknesses arise, there are specific tools to help strengthen the weaknesses. The components of the Sound Relationship House are: trust, commitment, build love maps, share fondness and admiration, turn towards instead of away, the positive perspective, mange conflict, make life dreams come true, and create shared meaning.
Using the Sound Relationship House Theory, the couples in conjunction with the therapist are able to pinpoint problems and design goals, that are consistent with the research around that problem. With clarity around problems, the therapist can pick evidence-based interventions to help couples solve their problems.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Click for more info ➞
CBT is a collaborative approach to solving relationship problems. By understanding how people think about relationships and how they behave, the therapist and the couple are able jointly understand what is leading to relationship problems.
Cognition refers to the thoughts you have about your partner, positive or negative. Thoughts influence how you feel in your relationship. Therapy looks at identifying unhelpful thinking patterns, challenging the way you are thinking, and developing different ways of thinking your relationship. If we think about our partner in negative ways, we are likely to behave in ways that will be destructive to the relationship.
Behavior refers to the actions you take in your relationship. By exploring your behavior cycle, and what is helping or hindering, you can experiment with different relationship promoting behaviors.
Using thinking skills and behavioral strategies couples can re-wire how they think about their relationships. This re-wiring leads to behaviors that are positive and helpful in relationships. Therapy success is determined by finding new ways to think about your relationship and your partner, and making behavioral changes to your relationship.
